An announcement of the first round results of the All-Ukrainian Architectural Design Competition “Rehabilitation of the Lybid Riverfront” took place in the House of Architects in Kyiv on the 14th of July. The Buyer is Public Association “Our Lybid Foundation” which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and protection of water bodies in Ukraine.

At one time, the idea of announcing a competition for the best project to rehabilitate the legendary river was approved and supported by the National Union of Architects of Ukraine and the Department of Urban Development and Architecture of the Kyiv City State Administration.

The Jury of the Competition included the leading Ukrainian architects, among them:
Ms. Olena Pavlivna Oliynyk – Architect, Vice President of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine, Chairman of the Competition Jury;
Mr. Oleksandr Viktorovych Svistunov – Chief Architect of the City of Kyiv, Director of the Department of Urban Development and Architecture of the Kyiv City State Administration;
Mr. Petro Fedorovych Markman – Architect, Vice President of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine;
Mr. Yuriy Ivanovych Seryoguin – Architect, Head of the Personal Architectural Firm “Yu. Seryoguin”;
Mr. Viktor Mykolayovych Lihno – Architect, Chief Architect of the design bureau ARCHITECTURE LEAGUE;
Mr. Oleksandr Vadymovych Popov – Architect, Director of the design bureau ARCHIMATIC;
Mr. Viktor Yakovych Mashtabey – Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Public Association “Our Lybid Foundation”;
Mr. Serhiy Anatoliyovych Molodov – Member of the Supervisory Board of the Public Association “Our Lybid Foundation”;
Mr. Denys Oleksandrovych Pikalov – General Director of municipal enterprise “Pleso”.
A large number of current architects and architects-to-be from various regions of Ukraine took an interest in the competition. Such great attention to the problematic water bodies in our country and the fruitful work of the contestants on the development of project designs is proof of the high standard of consciousness of our compatriots and their desire to change the situation for the better. At the close of the first round, the Jury had bidding proposals from 11 design teams to consider. Each project design is unique in its own way and contains challenging ideas for transforming the abandoned river into a picturesque public space. The participants’ project designs were presented in the exhibition hall of the House of Architects during the period from 29 June through 14 July.
The contestants personally presented their works to the public at the ceremonial event on 14 July.

The Jury selected four project designs, whose authors will take part in the second round of the competition, which will include a detailed design of the rehabilitated Lybid Riverfront. Ms. Olena Pavlivna Oliynyk, Head of the Competition Jury, announced the winners and held an awarding ceremony. The winners of the first round are:

Olena Pavlivna voiced an expert assessment made by the Jury members, analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of each project design of the laureates.
The bidder Oleksandr Kryvenko and the design team consisting of Eduard Karas’ and Yuliya Karas’ also received special prizes from the sponsoring partner of the competition – the company Saint-Gobain Building Products Ukraine – honorariums in the amount of UAH 7,500 for the best proposals in creating glass structure designs.

Another sponsoring partner – company Henkel Bautechnik (Ukraine) – also presented their prize – a honorarium in the amount of UAH 10,000 – to Oleksandr Kryvenko for the most challenging proposal of using the company materials in the project design. Thus, Mr. Kryvenko’s project design became a winner in three different nominations.

The companies Saint-Gobain and Henkel Bautechnik were official sponsors of the competition, providing financial assistance to its organizers. The companies’ environmental protection policies and their concern for the state of historic natural sites inspired great respect on the part of the public and competition participants. The Management of “Our Lybid Foundation” in the person of Chairman Lesya Kozenko expressed gratitude to the sponsoring partners for their support and fruitful cooperation.
